Walter Cronkite was "the most trusted man in America". There must have been some other anchors then, but I can't remember them. There wasn't any cable, and everyone in America watched four channels, counting PBS. As far as public opinion went, Cronkite was as powerful as LBJ or Nixon. When he turned against the Vietnam war, it made it okay for any sane person to follow him.

It's a completely different world now. We all watch whichever of the hundreds of channels we like, mostly on cable or satellite. There IS no Walter Cronkite. Anchors don't come from journalism, as Cronkite did. They come from college "communication" programs, and all look like male models.
