and when you are at war and such an enemy either hides among the population or is able to move relatively freely in the sunni area, how can you defeat them? I think we have a better chance of doing so being out of country sooner rather than later. Much of the jihadi focus is on the so-called US occupation--it should be much harder to get support from others for that line of reasoning once we exit or even announce timetables for departure. The trick is to train iraqi forces all over the world by us and our allies. The trick for the iraqis is to use force where and when needed and to move along quickly with their own timetable for constitution and elections. They also have to incent sunnis in a federal system that gives them more representation than one man, one vote. If all this happens in sync, a decent outcome may yet occur. US open ended committment or what was called by threaders as "stay the course" does not give us a better chance imho and is at far greater cost long term both in terms of folks lost and money spent.
