Actually we don't know what happened here. Was there a conception, or was this some odd natural cloning phenomenon? Did the article say? I can imagine a number of possibilities. It is possible that the parent was some sort of hermaphrodite capable of producing an egg and the means to fertilize the egg. I heard about one successful instance a while back that got all kinds of attention; very controversial but reportedly so clean, some called it immaculate.
