So a few bandits can take a country?

One would expect them to die in equal numbers, so no, a few bandits cannot take a country.

We took more casualties on one day of WWII than we have taken in this whole war.

In WWI we could be said to have done that vs Vietnam. But whats the point? Both WWI & WWII were far more of a threat to the US & Western democracy then Saddam ever was. BTW you bring up an important difference. Mass casualties in a short timespan tend to rally the populace (9/11), its the slow bleeding that changes hearts and minds. Long before we hit 3K dead in Iraq, baring a major disaster like a ship or a few C5's we will exit.

and yes, the partisan lines are that sharply drawn.

No they are not. If it remained strictly partisan, no change will happen in the next few years, Bush will stay the course. It's collapse of Republican support which will force the issue. But I'm sure you understand that anyway.
