Blair's rather mindless point of view, combining servility and manipulation, was that we (UK) would only have any influence over the US if we back them whatever - "there is no conflict involving the US in which we would not be their ally" or very similar quote.

The best duty of an ally here would have been to point out the problems of invading an unpleasant but unthreatening country, on a clearly dubious premise (since proven false), with spurious legal backing and without any plans for what would happen after the overt combat finished.
Maybe even do so rather more obviously than the memos make it seem we did... diplomacy has its limits.

Failing that, we could at least have stepped into the breech and provided sensible plans for the aftermath other than being showered with flowers. It does seem that much of the chaos was anticipated (let's face it, it was bloody obvious and plenty of people here were pointing it out before the "Mission Accomplished" declaration).
