Forbes Magazine had an article about the best corporate training program in the world. The cover photo showed a Marine officer in dress blues.

"May" be put in harm's way was my Dad's story. He joined in 1938, mustered out in 1946. Served in Pearl Harbor before it was bombed, served on the Northampton before it sank off Guadalcanal, started glider pilot training before the program was abandoned, became a navigator-bombardier on a B-25 before the invasion of Japan was moot.

He had the Expert rifleman badge, but Dad never saw action and never fired a shot in anger. I'm sure he recruited a bunch of Marines who did though.

Like you, he became a self-made successful business man and died on his feet three days after dancing and insisting that everyone stand up when the band played the Marine's Hymn. He said it was the National Anthem.
