What about dems like biden who are asking for more troops saying things that we cant afford to lose iraq now that we are there. It seems to me that there is a cadre of democrats led by biden, lieberman, clinton, bayh who are staking out a position to the right of Bush. And they align with republicanss like Lugar, McCain, Hagel et al.
Rummys dance over the weekend about too many troops making it seem like occupation was a cop out. They would have to move troops from korea and/or europe to add significantly. And of course even if they cant support a public timetable, iraqis feet will be held to the fire and the committment will not become open ended but more like a last best chance for success. Bush threw in his lot with rummy and cheney 100% in his speech and showed little flexibility. The 9/11 references do more harm than good in adding support because an ever increasing number of folks now believe they were had when that comparison was first made.
