I take it you're posing a counterfactual hypothesis, rather than arguing historical causation. That is to say, you are not arguing that democracy or the lack thereof had anything to do with WWI.

For example, one of the countries fighting Germany in WWI was Russia.

WWI was empire against empire. Whatever side the US took would be, by that fact, more democratic than the other, using your definition.
