I just read an interesting article today that dismissed the idea that it is regligious fanaticism. In fact the reason why it is promoted is because historically it has worked. It started in the 1980s in Lebanon and got the US troops and Israeli troops to leave. Incredibly bad signal to send to the tactic because it has expanded 10 fold since. We certainly do not want to send that same signal today.
