Because it's wrong.... France lost out geopolitically because, unlike Britain, she wasn't an island. Historically, French leaders (at least from the XVIIth century on) had to choose between defending their borders with the Netherlands and Germany, and waging naval wars against Britain, Spain and Portugal... There's a French witticism that says, On ne peut pas être au four et au moulin... That's basically why France lost North America to the Brits first (the Seven Years War) and to Jefferson next (Louisiana Purchase).
