Absolutely! My point exactly. Osama and the mullahs in Iran know that a free, prosperous, Democratic Iraq will be a magnet to all the oppressed in the surrounding countries. It will spell the death knell of the Iranian clerical dominance and it will spell the end of the pan-Muslim Caliphate that Osama, Zarqawi and Al-Zwahiri have been fighting for. A free Iraq will represent a knockout blow to all the oppression occurring in the Middle East. It will take decades to play out, but that is why Iraq has become the central fight against terrorism. I honestly believe that.

On the other hand, I think Bush is not the most competent president and had we a leader like Reagan or Bush Sr. we could have achieved that vision at much less cost to Americans and with world support. Instead, Bush Jr. has divided the world and forced us to go it alone. That's tragic.

My dad always told me that when you are stronger than your opponent and you know that you can easily defeat him, then you must always look for a way to let him save face. He said that in this way, you can leave him with his dignity and sometimes you can gain a friend. As a corrollary, he would say that a cornered cat can be unpredictable and exceedingly fierce. So you should take care to leave people a way out. Bush clearly never learned those lessons. He never allowed NATO or Europe a way to feel good about helping us, even though a free Iraq is even more in their best interest than in ours. Anyway, it's all lost opportunities and it makes me sad.
