Great idea - but why hasn't any of the administrations critics proposed this?

Thank you, and I just did.

Given the imminence of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, this might be the perfect time to pressure the Chinese into cooperation.

One pitfall might be the division between Pakistan and India over Kashmir, but Musharraf has been on the receiving end of terrorist attacks so better now than later. Recent events in Iran demonstrate that, regardless of whether the elections are fair or fake, it's more likely than not that hard-liners will be elected in Islamic countries. Musharraf is more-or-less our friend, the next Pakistani leader may not be.

At any rate, hard-liners may sponsor terrorism in other countries but none of them want to be on the receiving end in their own country, see, e.g., the Saudis and the Egyptians.
