That's the poorest damn reason to nominate someone for the Supreme Court.

The author wasn't suggesting Affirmative Action nor a quota system. It's a fact that, in general, people from different backgrounds bring different perspectives to the bench.

This isn't true in every occupation or profession, but it is true in occupations and professions where culture informs opinion and outlook. No such thing as a black way of looking at the atom, or an Hispanic way of performing surgery, but black and Hispanic writers, historians, and artists do have a different perspective.

From my observation, law is one place where background affects outlook. People from privileged backgrounds, for example, go one of two ways -- they reflexively side with the privileged, or they reflexively side with the down-trodden.
