It wasn't what Carter DID - it was what Carter DIDN'T do. He didn't invade Iran, or nuke Iran or any of the other things I and most other Americans would have had him do at the time. Had he done any of these things, almost certainly the hostages would have been killed, a LOT of Iranians too. He did finally attempt a commando style rescue that failed.
