India trails China in IT readiness CORPORATE BUREAU Posted online: Saturday, July 02, 2005 at 0030 hours IST NEW DELHI, JULY 1: Even as China seems to do better as an economy than India in using information and communication technologies (ICTs), India needs to do more to use and apply ICTs to meet domestic needs, says a World Bank report.
The report titled, ‘India and the Knowledge Economy’, has reviewed India’s take on ICTs, based on global IT indexes. While several indices have placed Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Singapore in the top spots, Indian cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and so on, have also performed remarkably better.
As per the report’s information society index (ISI), which has attempted to analyse a country’s ability to access and utilise information and IT, India is ranked 51th compared to China’s 44th position. The ISI measured a country’s information capacity and wealth based on four parameters, namely, computers, internet, telecom and social factors.
As per the report’s networked readiness index for 2004-05, India and China have both moved up the ranks in 2004-05. While Korea tops the list and holds 24th place among Asian nations, India is next on the list at 39th, surpassing China at 41th position. financialexpress.com |
