Chirac confidence rating plunges to new low: poll
Expatica ^ | 06/30/05 | AFP

PARIS, June 30 (AFP) - Confidence in French President Jacques Chirac plunged to a new low of just 21 percent Thursday, according to an opinion poll taken three weeks after the rejection of the EU constitution in a national referendum.

The score marked a three-point drop on a similar survey taken just after the May 29 vote and confirmed that Chirac now has the lowest confidence ratings of any French president since polling began 30 years ago, according to the TNS-Sofres agency.

Of those asked 77 percent said they did not have confidence in the president, 21 percent said they did have confidence, and another two percent had no opinion.

Before the sudden collapse of recent weeks, Chirac's

previous low at TNS-Sofres was 32 percent which he hit in October 1996 and again in April 2004.

Of his two predecessors, Francois Mitterrand fell to 31 percent in November 1991, and Valery Giscard d'Estaing was at 41 percent just before his election defeat to Mitterrand in 1981.

Chirac, 72, came to office in 1995 and has nearly two years of his second term to run.
