Not always! For instance, I have taken to NOT splitting eights against 9, 10, or ace in a game where surrender is allowed. I have not seen this come out in books yet but I think it is the correct play and I will not be surprised if the mathematicians agree.

Try to get a 4 A.M. game where there is just you and the bored dealer!
