When men where men, we would go a bit further and help Presidents for Life have shorter lifetimes. My conversion to Liberalism has made me disavow such wickedness however.

Rather than isolate Zimbabwe, I'd prefer to see a high ranking official in the US government actually learn Swahili and visit the region somewhat regularly. We should promote ties and economic development with the countries like Botswana which are more committed to good government. Let them lead by example. Zimbabwe will be much more receptive to following the lead of Botswana & Zambia than listening to us preach.

When I see these "Presidents for life," like Saddam and Mugabe, I realize that they are just the peak of a rotten structure. Mugube wouldn't stay up there without his henchmen, and they will battle to take over when he goes.

The surprising thing in Africa is that it is not just Generals that take over the country, sometimes it is a Sergeant. At times a pretty small number of people are needed to topple the old order and set up a new one (usually equally bad).
