Stalin and Mao were Liberals, were they not? Socialists are Liberals, are they not? No. I would call Stalin & Mao (and communism in general) authoritarian, which is the opposite of liberal. Perhaps you are confusing Left/Right with Liberal/Conservative. One can view these pigeon holes as roughly orthogonal which means that left/right has no bearing on liberal/conservative. One might be a left-liberal or a right-authoritarian. The combinations are independent.
