Robert; The original clone agreement was flawed, and allowed Power to sell any level of clone with one fee, so they picked the most expensive ones, wouln't you. A graded fee structure and freedom of all to enter would allow profits from all levels. Apple could keep it's top tier with an Apple logo to itself.
The market has assessed the kill clone strategy as equal to a kill Apple strategy. What the market believes will come to pass.

So if they have invested thousands, and you think you have them by the balls and they must stay. Well surprise, many left, and kept their orbs and never looked back. At some point the equation is made and balanced, and Apple is abandoned at one more site. Once abandoned they do not come back easily, so you need to make a seeding spreading Apple, nor a losing rear guard fighting Apple in retreat.
The flim flam man(Jobs) will have zero success, and this will soon be known.
The vaporware in the sky when Apple dies argument ain't valid. Crapsody is years away from viability(are there even any Betas out yet?, or does Apple not do Betas, preferring cash??
