BEIJING, July 4 -- China has launched a nationwide scientific research on soil erosion.

It is the largest of this kind since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.

Hundreds of experts will conduct the research and survey around China for one and a half years.

After the research, a huge comprehensive database on soil erosion will be set up, which will also provide reference for the issuing of new laws.

Li Rui, an expert from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, says the research is significant.

"First, it makes us be clear of the current situation; second, it helps us to predict to how much degree we can control the soil erosion in the future 15 to 20 years; and last, it enables us to decide what measures we can adopt to fight against soil erosion." Li said.

The research project was jointly launched by China's Ministry of Water Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering.
