The way I'm reading this website, you were viewing the last opposition of earth and mars. Opposition-the moment of shortest distance between the two- occurs at regular intervals, but since the orbits are not perfect, the shortest distance changes every time. The website says the next opposition occurs 2 yrs and 49 days from August 2003 when you were viewing. That's about October, 2005.
