Ray, contrary to the implied tone of your post, I am not just a "let's all join hands and sing for peace" type of guy.
At root, one part of me is just as cynical as you, and possibly even more despairing.
On the other hand:
-- I don't personally believe that the mass of peoples want war, devastation and destruction. On the contrary, I think most people are wanting survival, even in the face of the fact that ALL will die, eventually, through normal causes.
-- I believe the forces of greed and anger, in the hands of utterly corrupt leaderships who whip up fear in the masses and thus generate their "mandate" for war, devastation and destruction is what bring about our present situation and the potential situation you describe.
-- I believe that if LIFE, in any form, is not valued, considered, understood and even revered (as the Divine) that it soon becomes as expendable as a worn-out pair of shoes. Corrupt leaderships talk a good talk about valuing life, while persuing policies that kill, destroy and maim in vast numbers.
-- I believe people need to understand that WAR IS A RACKET, even in the simplicity described by Butler, here:

I could go on, but I won't. The point I am making is that we have to see the chinks in the armor of the opposition (in the form of corrupt leaderships and entrenched exploitive interest) and develop a STRATEGY for prevailing. You do not beat your opposition by just opposing them at THEIR game. That approach leads to almost certain defeat.
I can understand your pessimism. However, if I buy into that ONLY, for the rest of this life I just laugh my ass off, drink, smoke and guck myself to death. All that done the right way can be celebration of life. Done the wrong way it is just suicide.
Namaste!
