Can you see past the words in your grade school primer? There is a difference between a state religion and a state-mandated religion. We have a national bird. You are free to choose your own favorite bird. It's the same with religion. We have a national religion of monotheism. That does not mean that one religion is mandated or that anyone will be deported for being a pagan warlock.
For someone who holds himself out as an intellectual, you only seem to be able to operate in black & white.
