'War of Worlds' wins weekend

Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg were on top of the world yesterday as their alien invasion flick "War of the Worlds" racked up $77.6 million over the holiday weekend.
The movie, based on H.G. Wells' novel, has earned $113.3 million since opening Wednesday.

Even though "War of the Worlds" is trouncing its current competition, it failed to beat last year's July 4 blockbuster, "Spiderman 2," which set the weekend's record by taking in $115.8 million over four days.

"Batman Begins" pulled in $18.7 million for the weekend, dropping to second place after spending two weeks at the top of the box office. "Batman Begins" has grossed $154.1 million since it opened June 15.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie held fast at third place with $12.7 million for their action film "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," and the TV-to-movie remake "Bewitched" was close behind with $10.8 million.

Disney's "Herbie: Fully Loaded" rounded out the top five with $10.5 million.
