I had an "only in Texas" fourth of July.

A fireworks distributer setup a "safe zone" for fireworks outside of San Antonio. We packed a cooler of beer and soda and watermellon and bought a few dozen of those artillary shell rounds, some rockets, black-cats, and a bunch of roman candles. The zone was about 5 acres, and the grass had been cut and a firetruck was parked on either side. There were 3 firework stands open for business at the edges.

My wife and some friends setup chairs and snacks while me and my son, and some others went to the firing range. There were at least 500 people in a rough circle setting off every imaginable kind of fireworks. most people made a good effort at getting their explosives into the air, but every 5 minutes or so one of those mortar tubes would fall over and shoot the crowd on the other side of the field. A couple of times an errant rocket would fall into some group's stash of pending noise and the whole thing would go up at once with rockets and fountain cones all going off at once while the owners grabbed small children and ran.

There was a constant rain of debris and I was so glad I was wearing glasses (and had cotton in my ears). The smoke was so thick that there were times that you could barely see even though the place was constantly lit up with fountain cones and sparklers. I turned my back to the direction in which the smoke was emanating, and my shirt turned dark with a layer of carbon black. Even my hair seemed to have a touch of greecian formula. There were a few small fires which the firetruck would douse with a quick squirt from a hose, and a few burns which resulted in some colorful language. I was quite amazed that there were no casulties, I was hit three times by small rockets and buzz-bombs, but I saw many others hit by star-shells with 3 color lighting and crackling sound effects. They just brushed off what they could and continued the celebration. I saw many firey things hit the fireworks stands that were open and my principal goal in staking out a spot was to move as far from those gun powder depots as possible.

We ran out of fireworks and energy and drove back to Austin.
