I think you both have a point.

It is NOT religion which is the problem. The problem is that religious teachings, in the present with respect to Islam, have been hijacked and perverted by fanatics. This is not a problem which is new or confined only to Islam. History also includes the Inquisition, Salem Witch trials, etc....... it is not faith but fanaticism which is the nature of the problem.
