Wearing my realist hat now and i do have more than one, i would say we have to look at both long term and short term consequences of our FP. Wilsonianism never worked in its pure form and neither does your central america example during the Communist period. Whats different now is that this WOT is a hot war while the Cold war stayed mostly cold except on the edges like VN and Afganistan when the two great powers misjudged the situation(s).
To take that approach is central asia is not really that much different than we do in egypt and SA in the mideast. MY point to Bill is that we cant be everywhere and be engaged in hot wars everywhere. There is great advantage to engaging others who are willing to do the heavy lifting. Also china/russia/india/pakistan are the dominant central asia regional powers and there is no way around that. Why piss them off when they fight the same enemy as we do? Will this incrase their power vis a vis the US? I think not because the US is being weakened by these open ended wars. Mike
