And, though it is true that British-held Basra has got its pulse back much sooner than Baghdad and is displaying other vital signs as well, the task of keeping order in a Shiite majority city is clearly an easier one. Nonetheless, there must be something to Jackson's belief that soldiering also involves a degree of visible fraternization and a willingness to go on the streets with Iraqi police and civilians, rather than gesture at them from inside a space-suit or armored vehicle, and then shoot them dead if they don't get it right the first time.

Hitchens rarely gets it right. While, he is more pro US than most Brit journalists, he enjoys using the hot poker whenever he can. Apparently, he can't recall the many times that US and Iraqi forces have worked together to take down insurgents.
And I guess the endless number of internet photos showing our troops handing out supplies and helping Iraqis doesn't count as "being out there in the streets".

If the reporters he speaks of were shot deliberately and without cause by our military, then he has a point. Maybe his next article will specifically show us the proof. Otherwise, he is just another journalist trying to make a story. For his next book??
