DEFINING VALUES: Strongest preference for diplomacy over use of military force. Pro-choice, supportive of gay marriage and strongly favor environmental protection. Low participation in religious activities. Most sympathetic of any group to immigrants as well as labor unions, and most opposed to the anti-terrorism Patriot Act.

I don't see support for NAFTA or welfare reform anywhere in that list. NAFTA was a Republican-proposed bill, and welfare reform was enacted over the dead bodies of this liberal group, with the NYT is full bore prediction of starving children in the streets.

I also fail to see ANY liberal democrats supporting CAFTA now. How can that be, if they are pro-free trade as you claim?

Appropriating NAFTA and welfare reform was classic Clinton triangulation. You do remember triangulation, don't you? Hint: it did not consist of sticking to liberal Democratic programs, but of appropriating some Republican ones.
