Four Picks In Semi-Equipment Stocks
07.06.05, 10:43 AM ET

Prudential Equity Group reiterated a "neutral" rating on the semiconductor capital-equipment industry, saying sector stocks are likely to remain range-bound until further clarity develops on 2006 capital spending trends. For the second quarter, Prudential expects companies to report orders at the low end of guidance and to provide conservative order guidance. "Our channel checks suggest that volumes were as expected and the companies maintained tight expense control, which should lead to in-line revenues and earnings," Prudential said. The research firm said IBM (nyse: IBM - news - people ) and Samsung are crucial for improving order patterns in the third quarter and that the companies best poised to benefit from this are Lam Research (nasdaq: LRCX - news - people ), ASML Holding (nasdaq: ASML - news - people ), KLA-Tencor (nasdaq: KLAC - news - people ), and Novellus Systems (nasdaq: NVLS - news - people ). For the second half of 2005, Prudential said Novellus and Brooks Automation (nasdaq: BRKS - news - people ) will likely face the biggest cuts in earnings estimates.
