I understand you don't like Bork, but to make the leap that Kennedy does isn't really plausible. It's like saying; I want to raise the speed limit on our highways, so therefore I'm in favor of killing more people. There is causality, but it's not a linear line from one event to the other.
Issues such as abortion stir up allot controversy in regard to what specific policy we should adopt, but from what I understand of Bork’s position; it’s linked with who decides, not what is decided. Some believe that voters should decide, some believe judges should decide. In addition, I don’t believe Bork is any more conservative than Scalier, and he’s been a very effective Judge. Our culture has dramatically changed in the past 30 years. So even if Roe V Wade were overturned and it was left to state legislatures to decide, I doubt many women would have a difficult time finding a state with legal abortion, especially in the first trimester. Driving a car from Utah to Washington isn't that difficult in today's day and age. So the argument that overturning Roe V Wade will automatically cause women to have back-alley abortions is a species one. Heck, I'll wager there are back-alley abortions which happen today under the umbrella of Roe V Wade. Put another way, it’s similar to saying, if our government doesn't pay for every abortion, those who can’t afford it will have back-alley abortions. So vote for government funding of abortion or back-alley abortions will happen and people will die from them.
The same is true of Segregation. I don't believe Bork is a racist, so to infer he wants blacks to sit at segregated lunch counters, the way Kennedy did, is rhetorical ugliness of the extreme kind.
Now, let's look at a few other items Kennedy listed in that diatribe.
rogue police could break down citizens' doors in midnight raids,
Where does this come from?
schoolchildren could not be taught about evolution,
Did Bork make this decision for every school in the country? Or did he opine states should decide?
writers and artists would be censored at the whim or [sic] government,
How exactly would Judge Bork make this happen Mr. Kennedy?
and the doors of the Federal courts would be shut on the fingers of millions of citizens for whom the judiciary is often the only protector of the individual rights that are the heart of our democracy.
Another emotional diatribe spun by one of the biggest hypocrites ever to walk in the Senate chambers.
Why don’t we just say in response to Kennedy? Voting for Ted Kennedy will lead to thousands of women being thrown in the water and drowned? |
