The structures that resulted from social movements of the 60's 70's and 80's were very powerful at the time. I haven't heard anything from the N.O.W. lately and they were at the top of their game then. The current rise of conservative structures is a direct result of 1) The conservative agenda is purposeful and productive, 2) The values of the right wing are clear and definable, 3) Voters move away from pointless character assassination and nastiness (from both the object of the attacks and the attackers) 4) The left wing is wallowing in negative politics without a clear principle centered alternative for people to grab onto. I suspect you have nailed it on the head. There was a direction to liberalism at the time. Now there is a direction to conservatism. In both cases the out of power ism was left sounding shrill in criticism. "Listen to the stunning silence about Dick Durbin." 5) Where as the conservative movement is getting results the liberal finger pointers lack credibility. They even decided to be anti-gay when they suspected someone in the white house of being gay. So, the stock pile of political prestige put in place over the last 4 decades is rapidly being depleted with no efforts to rebuild. That is too bad because there is a great deal of important liberal work that needs to be done. Looks like at some point they will need to rebuild from scratch. The important thing is for the conservative movement to keep focussed on what they are trying to do and accomplish rather than running interference for liberals' criticism of the direction. There are many changes that are required to move our country and the world forward. Social Security is bankrupt and needs to mended to keep the dream of keeping our seniors out of poverty alive. Medical expenses threaten to consume an ever greater portion of our national income. Anti-social behavior threatens to become the norm. Traditional values are being trampled and anarchy at the expense of others is becoming more prevalent. Government interference in our lives is increasing and the growth must be reversed. There are many value of our society that must be conserved.
