My guess is that Divx advocates might have the final word.
They have Disney committed to release new titles on Divx
at same time as VHS tape sales. Add Universal and Paramount
and you can see the studios doing an end-around the rental
stores using retailers and Divx. I wonder how the pricing
model works because this is similar to id software method
of distributing quake. Will the retailers make enough money
given the reduced cost of Divx purchase unless they get a cut
of the "purchase" done over Divx systems?

The lack of return requirements (as in current rentals) is a
huge win for this kind of system. For infrequent renters,
this cuts down in 1/2 the time for renting videos. Is that
worth an extra $50? Also the security on Divx may be more
foolproof because the DVD holdouts are embracing it despite
CSS already available for DVD?
