You have Marx on one side and ayn rand on the other with most of us in the middle somewhere. The battle is always in the middle and what is the middle shifts over time.

I think that there might be two orthogonal axes (at least) which help describe our orientation, one ranging between liberal and conservative while the other ranges between authoritarian and libertarian. The problem is that an authoritarian liberal and an authoritarian conservative are distinctly different from each other, but also quite opposed to libertarian of either liberal or conservative ilk. Thus, singular labels insufficiently characterize people's politics, and help to confuse the actual battle lines.
