Reid is playing the best card he has - brilliantly.

In the face of declining polls, Iraq and Afghanistan getting more violent, the Plame affair percolating, the UN ambassador mess still on the floor, Reid is offering the President a political pass.

Let's face reality. Bush is NEVER going to nominate a liberal justice - but he might well nominate a nutcase like Clarence Thomas, forcing a Senate fight that the Democrats, outnumbered 55-45, shouldn't win - but who knows. Many Republicans are looking beyond Bush to their own political survival once the pendulum starts to swing back to the middle. But then again, Bush has proven he can get his way. Democrats would be wise not to assume they can block a right wingnut. Clarence Thomas is sitting proof of that.

Reid is offering a relatively easy nomination for the President's close friend, Gonzalez, and political cover against the right-wingnuts in exchange for the President not nominating a certified, card-carrying ultra-conservative wacko.

It could be a win-win for both sides.
