The best place to live so as not to use energy... St. Thomas.. or the Caribbean islands... Only electricity. If you build the home facing the right was the Trade Winds cool the home. No Air when I lived there. Just opened the doors and let the breezes flow through.

I heated one home with a thick cast iron stove where a small fire burned the little wood that had to be used... radiant heat. It was just satisfactory. Insulation in the house has to be good.

Wood burning is not good for the environment.. Emits too much bad stuff.. I was told.

Put heatilaters in other fireplaces in homes where the heat went UP the chimney.. At least it blew some into the rooms.

UP here in God's Country... I have three heating systems.
The outside heat pump heats the house until the temperature drops to below 30 degrees. Then the gas fired(propane) kicks in.. It heats up fast. The chill can be taken off the house with the gas fired fireplace. Propane tank in ground outside. Season contracts available to lock in the prices... which have sky rocketed just like gasoline.

The Monitor is in the basement apartment with kerosene heat.
It is very efficient. Uses about a thimble full of fuel a day. One can keep the temperature at 55 and heat 900 Sq. Ft.
You might want to look into it. The Monitor is vented outside. No odor... And it's very safe. The top of it doesn't get hot like the cast iron stove which melted a candle stick holder of pewter that I had sitting on it. One could not get near it so with children it is not safe....

I don't know about other heating systems.. When this home was built four years ago I tried to get what was the most efficient heating system.

The home in Florida, heat pump. Mostly for air conditioning. I use a little radiant electric heater for the colder days..

I think that the Monitor is a great way to go. You can have more than one in a home. I have a friend who has two. One at one end of the house and also the other. A good fan can disperse the heat.

Hope this helps.
