The point about the movie was Jesus' suffering for us. The violence thus was integral to the plot. That doesn't make it automatically good, or necessary, or inspiring, or enjoyable to watch or even acceptable, it just means its not gratuitous. It can be a million other horrible things but it doesn't fit the definition of gratuitous.
