This event could be a turning point. The ego of Al-Quaeda has greatly mis-judged their support from mainstream Islam.

I compare it to the right wing radicals of the 90s in America. What was thought to be a huge movement of committed revolutionaries turned out to be, not that big a thing after all. There were large numbers of highly organized weekend warriors heading off to training camps in mountainous regions of the USA until Timothy McVeigh put everyone to the test. No one wanted to be identified with that, so for the most part the whole thing went poooof... and vanished.

It is easy for struggling people all over the world to sit ranting in their arm chairs and identify with supposed martyrs challenging the mythical great satan of the west. It is quite another thing to identify with and support the murder of dignitaries from among their own people.

I think/hope this marks the beginning of the end for Al Qaeda. At which time one of the true martyrs will be identified as the innocent man from Egypt who has sacrificed his life for the cause of peace.
