Shades Re: "Bahamas" Dang, what a nightmare vacation! <g>. Any place with lots of foreign tourists can be like that, the tourists attract all the crooks and skallywags from all over the country. I really like Mexico, some of the most beautiful country anywhere. I've never had any trouble with de Policia there. If you obey every law and have every last scrap of your papers in order and most importantly are very polite and respectful to them they won't give you any problems.

The problems Americans have there is that they have the idea that a person has "rights" in their dealings with law enforcement and other elements of the government, as they imagine they have here in this country. In Mexico you have a legal system that has its foundations in Code Napoleon rather than English Common Law and places a higher emphasis on the common good than on individual rights. In a confrontation with de policia you are considered to be guilty unless a panel of judges decides otherwise at your trial. No "jury of your peers" either. Its really a pretty good system.

And stay away from trouble spots like Chiapas where the police or the military might mistake you for an "outside agitator" in league with the rebels, in which case they are likely to just shoot you and leave you in a ditch.
