Harry Reid: Hillary Clinton Not Best Candidate for '08

The Senate's top Democrat is expressing doubts that Hillary Clinton can win the White House in 2008 - even though the big media have all but crowned her the nominee of her party.

"I think she is the person to beat," Reid told the Reno Gazette-Journal late Wednesday. "But that doesn’t necessarily mean she is the best candidate."

Despite widespread predictions that Sen. Clinton has the nomination locked up, Reid called the 2008 Democratic presidential sweepstakes "a wide-open field." The top Senate Democrat attributed perceptions that Clinton is "leading at this stage" to the fact that she "of course has lots of money."

The Gazette-Journal described Reid as "wary of Clinton's bid for president," saying he feels "there are other Democratic senators and governors who might be better candidates."

Though Reid declined to go into specifics, Democrats are known to be concerned that Clinton may be too divisive a candidate.

In his best-selling book "The Truth About Hillary," author Ed Klein notes that Clinton has always turned off a large percentage of voters, going back to her husband's days as Arkansas governor.

"Hillary is still a polarizer," political analyst Charlie Cook told Klein. "There's a big chunk of people who would never vote for her under any circumstances."

Even longtime Clinton aide Harold Ickes, who masterminded her 2000 Senate victory, has expressed doubts, telling Time magazine last year, "I'm one of the few in the semi-inner circle who [doesn't] think she can win" the White House.
