What a silly article.....no wonder you found it notable....appeasement and apathy is not an option. The people who died on 9/11 and 7/7 will have died in vain.

The fact is the WOT will make us safer in the long run. No doubt the US sponsored invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan have pissed off the Islamofascist radicals such as OBL. No doubt these actions are serving as recruiting tools for the enemy. The misrepresentation of US intentions and US missteps in prosecuting this new kind of war probably leads to anger which leads to people willing to become suicide bombers or who are otherwise willing to target and kill innoncents in the ME and elsewhere on the globe. The global threat from terror has probably been elevated as a result of US action. All these factoids are probably true. Assuming they are for the sake of argument....so what? The fact that we may be pissing off the extremists and making some of our less than staunch allies nervous does not make US actions wrong.

In the 1960's President John F. Kennedy used military force to desegregate the Alabama school system. This angered many all over the south. Black churches were bombed. People joined the KKK in record numbers. Civil rights workers were harrassed, beaten, arrested and even killed. Would you argue that because some in the south were motivated to violence we should therefore forgo desegregation....? Certainly the use of force was justified.

Whenever you do the right thing, you are likely to anger those who want to continue doing the wrong thing. When you begin the process to bring freedom to a country, those who benefitted by dictatorship will be angered. When you give women rights you will anger those who enjoyed and benefitted by oppressing them. When you champion religious freedom you will anger the clerics whose power and influence will be diminished.

The central thesis of the WOT is NOT that it is designed to make us safer today, next week or even next year....Its about making us safer 10 or 20 years from now. Bringing freedom, hope and prosperity to the ME is the way to remove the conditions which breed vermin like OBL and others like him who seek to impose their 14th century extremist agenda on others by violence and fear. Removing those conditions is the only way to make ourselves safer in the long run.

At present, if we anger those who are benefitting from the lack of freedom, from oppression, from religious intolerance, etc. and this motivates those people to violence...this must be a burden we are willing to bear if we expect to make the world a better place for our children and theirs.
