Leahy stands shoulder to shoulder with Ted Kennedy as one of the real sleez-balls of the Senate. To paraphrase the Democrat thinking on Gitmo now would go something like this, "we were wrong, but just in case we may have been right it was good to criticize the facility and the people serving there".
As I said when this story broke. All they had to do was hop on a three hour flight and see for themselves. Incredible we have people in the Senate so unwilling to give military leaders the benefit of the doubt, and so willing to provide ammunition to our enemies.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kans., said Sunday that U.S. interrogations of al Qaeda terrorists at Guantanamo Bay have helped foil London-style bomb plots against America.
Noting that he had just returned from an inspection tour of the U.S. detention facility, Roberts told "Fox News Sunday, "I was tremendously impressed by the terrorist interrogation that is continuing down there. "That kind of interrogation is providing 50 to 60 percent of the intelligence that we need to stop an attack like [London]," Roberts contended. Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., who had earlier called for Guantanmo Bay to be closed, was asked if a recent congressional fact finding mission to the controversial facility, which turned up no evidence of detainee abuse, has ended the Gitmo debate.
"It may very well," he told Fox.
In the next breath, however, Dodd said that a clean bill of health for Guantanamo now doesn't mean abuses didn't take place in the past.
"If, in fact, things are improving and we're not engaging in the kind of activities we were before, then that's good news and we welcome that," he said. |
