Fundamentalist Sources: Al-Qa'ida Sleeper Cells Behind London Blasts GMP20050708706003 London Al-Sharq al-Awsat (Internet Version-WWW) in Arabic 08 Jul 05
[Report by Abd-al-Rahim Ali: "Fundamentalist Sources: Al-Qa'ida Sleeper Cells in Europe Behind the Blasts"]
[FBIS Translated Text]
Cairo -- Informed fundamentalist sources have said that the explosions that took place in the London underground and several passenger busses were definitely carried out by Al-Qa'ida's sleeper cells in Europe. In statements to Al-Sharq al-Awsat the sources said that the perpetrators took advantage of the British people's joy for winning the right to organize the [ 2012] Olympic Games and the security confusion which ensued to plant their explosives in the carriages and carry out the operation. The sources said that it is unlikely that the operation was carried out as a suicide operation. They said that the method of planting timed explosive devices is closer to the spirit of the operation. The sources, who refused to reveal their identity, said that Al-Qa'ida planted a large number of these cells in the heart of Europe and the United States prior to the September 11, 2001 blasts. They added that Usama Bin Ladin and Ayman al-Zawahiri knew that the battle that would flare up between them and Europe and the United States would last for a decade, and that is why they prepared for the confrontation by planting the biggest number possible of those cells in the heart of Europe, and particularly in the important states such as Britain, Germany, France, and Spain.
The sources said that senior leaders in Al-Qa'ida supervised the planting of some of these cells, such as the one which was planted in the United States -- the planting of which was supervised by Al-Qa'ida's second-in-command Al-Zawahiri in a secret visit he made to the United Statesin 1995 where he remained at the time, according to what was revealed by the statements of suspects in the returnees from Albania case in 1999, for about a year during which he toured some 10 states.
The sources intimated that Al-Qa'ida would refrain from announcing that it is carrying out operations against any country until it has fully prepared for them. They added that preparations for these operations -- according to Al-Qa'ida's way of operating -- were made at least three months in advance. The sources hinted that the organization would prepare fully for the operation and then announce its objectives and wait until the security alert ends in the country concerned before finally carrying out the operation.
The sources cited as evidence what happened in the Nairobi and Dar es Salaam blasts, and later in the September 11 blasts and the incidents in Madrid whereby Al-Qa'ida made an announcement a long time prior to these operations -- up to six months in the case of some operations such as Madrid, New York, and Washington -- and then carried out the operations. The sources said that, by announcing first the operation and then carrying it out, Al-Qa'ida aims to influence world public opinion and prove that it does what it says, which would call for a review of all plans, should the organization announce afterwards that it is targeting a particular country.
The sources also expressed fears of a British backlash against several fundamentalist elements in Britain -- even those who have acquired political asylum. They added that Britain may possibly deport or hand over those elements to heir countries of origin, in an attempt to wrest any information that would be useful in pinpointing the whereabouts and hideouts of elements belonging to Al-Qa'ida's sleeper cells. The sources however downplayed the importance of information that the Arab fundamentalist elements residing legally in Britain might have about these cells and said that the most that these can do is sympathize with what Al-Qa'ida is doing. They added that the organization is keen not to contact these elements in order not to reveal their relations.

Al-Qaeda ... the terrorist group which has left its mark on the world over the last several years, has now bloodied London. What is this terrorist organization, which is claimed to have been strengthened by U.S. policies in Iraq? Where was their leader, Osama bin Laden, born? What kind of an education did he have? What does he believe? With this series of article you will get to know the terrorist leader who's bloodied the whole world over the last five years?
OSAMA BIN LADEN
His real name is Osama bin Muhammed bin Awwad bin Laden. His date of birth differs from source to source. According to a report presented by the Islamic Cultural Center in London, he was born in 1957. It's also claimed that he was born in 1955 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia as well as on July 30, 1957 in Jeddah. According to Interpol records, he was born on March 10, 1957.
His father's name was Muhammed bin Laden, but he's registered with Interpol as Abdurrahman Awwad. He died in 1968 and had 23 wives and more then 50 children. Osama bin Laden's father was of Yemeni origin, and his mother was from Saudi Arabia. (Some sources state that his mother was Palestinian, however.) Osama bin Laden is also known by the following names: Sheik, Abu Abdullah, Mucahit sheik, hadji, Abdul Hay, El Kaqa, administrator, chairman, emir, prince, contractor, and James Bond.
Bin Laden's family
Osama bin Laden is the 17th child of Yemeni Muhammed bin Laden. Some sources say he was his youngest son. Muhammed bin Laden moved from Yemen to Saudi Arabia in the 1930s and became a successful contractor through tenders there and turned his family into one of the richest families in the country.
He owned the bin Laden Group which had branches worldwide and, according to Michael Moore's controversial film "Fahrenheit 9-11," business ties to the Bush family of Crawford, Texas. Muhammed bin Laden died in 1968 in a plane crash, leaving behind a fortune totaling $11 billion.
Some of Muhammed bin Laden's wives are Egyptian, Jordanian, Libyan and Saudi Arabian. The children were separated according to the mother's nationality, and bin Laden is said to be the only son of a Saudi mother.
There's no exact information regarding how many wives and children Osama bin Laden has. Sources contain contradictory information. According to various sources, he has four wives and 13, 15, or 23 children. Some of his children are called Muhammed, Saad, Abdurrahman, and Abdullah. His eldest son is Saad.
Osama bin Laden's first wife, who he married when he was 17, is from Syria.
Laden's education
Bin Laden went to primary, middle, and high school education in Jeddah. Laden didn't have a foreign education like his brothers, but instead went to King Abdul Aziz University in Saudi Arabia. There's varying information regarding bin Laden's education. Some sources say that he has a contractor's license, while others maintain that he studied economics or public administration. However, what is certain is that his education wasn't religious. Some sources state that bin Laden has a master's in operations management. He graduated from university in 1979.
His religious approach was nurtured by Muhammed Kutup (Seyyid Kutup's brother), Abdullah Azzam, and by other fundamentalists.
Bin Laden's outlook and personality
Bin Laden has a different interpretation of Wahhabism, the official form of Islam in Saudi Arabia, and he doesn't regard the traditional Saudi Arabian understanding as logical. He's known for criticizing Saudi Arabia's oligarchic, religious, and political practices.
On the other hand, he was a follower of Abdullah Azzam, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. Ahmet Zeidan, al-Jazeera TV's Islamabad correspondent, met with Osama bin Laden many times and stated in his book about him that bin Laden thinks that the Arabic and Islamic countries can't become independent and that Arab countries' borders are controlled and divided by the West. Apparently, bin Laden thinks that if the Arabic and Islamic unity is achieved, then they could live in peace for hundreds of years, like they did in the past.
Zeidan describes bin Laden as vain, saying that at a wedding bin Laden had his followers shoot a movie of him reading a poem. He describes bin Laden as "heroic, vain, calculating, a caliph, and ruthless." Bin Laden openly used the word "terrorist" to describe himself, according to Zeidan.
