Piper Jaffray recently talked with a number of advertisers and web publishers about their use of affiliate marketing. The vast majority of merchants asserted that affiliate marketing is the highest ROI channel vs. other forms of online advertising. Additionally, merchants remain very attracted to paying a fixed cost in affiliate marketing vs. other forms of marketing where the ROI is less certain. There has been concern that advertisers are shifting their budgets away from affiliate marketing in favor of paid search. However, firm says this is not the case. Firm estimates the affiliate marketing segment will grow 30% in 2005. Firm believes that Commission Junction/Be Free (owned by ValueClick) is the largest affiliate network. As such, affiliate marketing represents 31% of VCLK's revenue and 41% of its gross profits.
