Nan Aron on the Gang of 14 Deal:
Hugh Hewitt

HH: So you think those seven Democrats agree with your interpretation of the deal?

NA: Yea, I do.

HH: Have they confirmed that to you?

NA: I do. We've had some discussions with their staffs.

HH: And so you really think they agree with your interpretation?

NA: I do. I certainly do. It only makes sense.

Nan Aron, President of the Alliance for Justice, was my guest today. The transcript will be up at Radioblogger later, but in addition to raising the specter of opposing Attorney General Gonzales, she also made clear that Judges Alito and Garza and former D.C. Circuit nominee Miguel Estrada would also be opposed. On a previous appearance on my show she announced that she would urge filibusters of Judges Luttig, McConnell and Roberts --also said to be on the president's short list.

Aron also announced that she has had extensive conversations with the staffs of the seven Senate Democrats who were party to the McCain Gang deal and that the nomination of Brown, Owens or Pryor would be an "extraordinary" circumstance. Read the whole thing. It doesn't matter who the president nominates. The "groups" need to raise money and you can't raise money by agreeing that a nominee is acceptable.

It seems likely to me that Dems are trying to lure the president into nominating the AG by purring about his "moderation," but are planning to savage him just as they would a Luttig or a Roberts.

Oh, there's a filibuster coming. Nice work, Senator McCain. Good drafting, Senators DeWine, Graham and Warner.
