I wonder why every Republican admin has sucked up to them forever. Pragmatism? No, you guys are above that. Nixon, Reagan, Ford, Bush 1 and Bush 2, they all love the Saudis. When was the last time you heard George criticize the Saudis?

I think virtually all foreign policy up until 1990 was dedicated to the prevention of communism (ie, anti USSR and to a lesser degree anti-China). That focus dwarfed everything else (human rights, freedom, etc.). That explains the pro-Saudi stance up until then. As for going forward, it often takes a long time for policy to change (look at US policy toward Cuba, its antiquated). However, going forward, I would be surprised to see a significant shift in US policy toward the Saudis.

I would like to see something along the lines of "Democratize or lose the oil fields - your choice".
