Great find, Keith, & a marketing idea to capitalize on it -- when one system consumes 100 watts less power, we are talking about serious money. And this does not even count in the fact that we need an additional 100 watts for the air-conditioner to get rid of that heat." In the case of the second company we interviewed, power savings could amount to more than a million dollars per year!

It's high time AMD started MARKETING their power advantage in desktops. I propose that they come up with industry standards allowing perhaps 75w quiescent power and 150w full load power consumption. Or perhaps it could be two power level specs, one for "Ultra Green" and one for "Green." Any PC meeting those criteria could get an "Ultra Green PC" designation by some industry group. AMD could even lobby power authorities to give rebates when companies buy "Ultra Green" PC. Even if AMD reimbused the power authorities, the PR would be invaluable.

I'm not sure there is one worldwide umbrella organization that could certify the PCs. Does Underwriters Laboratories (UL) still exist?

You could argue that, 8 months from now, some of the Intel PCs will have superior power characteristics to AMD PCs. However, in terms of environmental cost and power cost savings, lowering power consumption another 20w is not very significant.

Note, the specific power levels, and designations like Green and Ultra Green may not be optimal, but I think its a very good concept since Intel's public "persona" is quite vulnerable right now. <g>
