This one made the rounds in my world (forestry) back in the 80s, and it is too true to be that funny to many of us.

The real tragedy of the commons is that good forest management on public lands was basically restructured so you have to cover twice as many acres to get half as much wood, and the growth rate of the stands suffers from the law of unintended consequences. There are positive results too, but nobody really knows what they are. At least not that many people are camping out up in the tops of trees any more.

Last I looked nobody has stopped building houses, so that wood has to come from somewhere. That somewhere is not our backyard anymore, but we will find out soon enough whether it was a good idea to swap good forest management here for no forest management in third world supplier countries.
