Indeed, the struggle in Israel today is a microcosm of what needs to happen in this whole region.

Mr. Sharon described the settler youths who wrote "Muhammad Is a Pig" as "extremist gangs who are trying to terrorize Israeli society and tear it to pieces through violence against Jews and Arabs, and [through] offending Muslims and violating their symbols by thuggery and disobedience."

It's time the Arab-Muslim world talked to its Islamo-fascists, suicide "martyrs" and hate-spewing preachers the same way.

First lets get real clear. I don't trust Sharon any farther than I can throw him........and give his girth, that's not far. After all, just three years ago, he said on public tv the Palestinians will never have their own state.........that they are not bad people but statehood is out of the question. That's the same Sharon who 25 years ago turned his back on the massacre of Palestinians in a Lebanon refugee camp at the hands of Christian Lebanese, and 15 years ago, the same Sharon who authorized the construction of thousands of housing units in the West Bank and Gaza. A leopard rarely changes its spots.

However, you raise a good point.........the Israel righties' approach to the Palestinians has failed badly. That the 'noble' Israeli settlers were hardly noble is no surprise. In fact, on this thread, they were seen by some as victims and the Palestinians as savages.......sound familiar? Its nice to see the truth is finally emerging.

The other reason why I see merit in this article.......it shows the folly of the current American policy with re. to the ME. Sharon and the righties in Israel were playing the tough parents..........a role you like so much........with the Muslims, knocking them back every chance they could. That has failed. The current American policy is modeled after the Israeli policy. It too is destined to fail.

You don't win by hitting sentient beings over the head particularly when they have legitimate grievances. The last 5 years have been a disaster for American foreign policy that will take at least a decade to get over. The sooner we get started rectifying these mistakes the faster it will go.
